Quadcopter Flight School 4: Horizontal Flight and Turning

Want to learn to do more than just hover your quadcopter? This flight tutorial video will help you learn how to fly and turn your quadcopter in horizontal flight.

Horizontal translational flying is not obvious to most people. As a result, many new quadcopter pilots have difficulty doing anything more than simple up and down hover flights. But a quadcopter is capable of doing much more.

We'll start the lesson with simple out and back flying, progress through rudder turns, and complete the lesson with an intro to banked turning.

  1. Hello sir .
Thanks for all the videos .They are great and make me feel verry confident about your oppinion on quads .
I just got as a present a h8c , learned to use it mainly indoors ( was grounded for a few weeks by a nasty sickness ) , went outside and learned a little bit about my quad and blew 2 motors in the process . At this point I am between ordering more motors and parts for my H8C or buying a new more resistent one , maybe a little bit faster too .
My budget is around 300$ . The thing is I also love the camera feature but also would like a sporty quad .My question is : what quad would you advice me to buy within that budget ? Do I have the option of buying 2 quads , one sporty and one for video recording with my money ?
Thanks allot and happy flying :)

    1. Syma x8g should be good. The camera it comes with is OK but it would be better to use a GoPro with it. Once you are comfortable with that I would get a parrot BeBop drone. Then after that a DJI phantom

    2. Wow, are you joking, A Parrot Bebop is no upgrade to any Drone.
The picture quality is awful, The controls lag like hell, they aren't sturdy and are very prone to breaking. Every Quadcopter over $75,- will outperform it in each and every way.
XK Detect x380 would be a much better choice then the Parrot.
Also the new Xiro Models seem to perform way better then the Phantom series of DJI, But the S800 and S1000+ series still are the best around for ready to fly Quadcopters.
Also building your own frames will always work better then those RTF quadcopters, here 2 examples of very cheap easy flyable brushless RTF frames. After you can control a Syma X8G these 2 quads will rock your world if you are in aerial Photography. The F450 frame carries a GoPro(Mediocre camera way overated) with ease. If you want to attach a Red(Weapon,Epic or Scarlet Those are really the best Camera's around) or Mamiya(together with Hasselblad one of the nicest still camera's)Nikon D-Series(The best consumer grade camera's) Or just a simple good Canon DSLR(Not as good as the Nikon ones but people still seem to like them, and way better then a GoPro)go for the second link and choose the U580 frame.

Both are well under $300 dollars and will provide much more pleasure and reliability over the Parrot and the DJI(Their customer service sucks big time)

    1. The syma x5c or syma x8c (x8c is better) If you get one of those you can remove the camera it comes with and use some straps

The syma x8g comes with an action camera already built in.

    2. A syma x5c or syma x8c (x8c is better). If you get one of those slide off the camera it comes with and use some straps to attach your camera.

The syma x8g comes with a built in action camera for only a little bit more money. Hopefully this helped! Make sure to look up all models before you make your choice!

  10. I just have a question, I been watching your reviews and simce like the distance you fly your copters is nice. When I fly my copters it looks to me I can not get them to respond to my command I don't know if you do something to your remotecontrols. Can you help me out with this.

  11. Watching these videos and practice practice practice have all but eliminated my lack of confidence in learning to fly quadcopters -well-
The only thing I might add is adding a "side to side" component into part 1.
Out and back, side to side all while oriented forward.
For me at least that transitioned into big circles and "flying around" while oriented forward which transitioned into true forward orientation flight. -that's just me of course.
Regardless it's videos like these which help put the concepts into your head that you will then implement on the field.
    So cool.

  23. Thank you for these videos! You and "Ali" have helped me to finally learn how to turn a quadcopter the proper way! I never thought I would be able to do this, but today while I was out in the below zero temps and it clicked in my brain!

I just stood there in the middle of a soccer (football for Europe) field with a slight wind, looking at my quadcopter hovering and all of sudden, I had your voice and Ali's in my head telling me how to do the turns and figure 8's.

    It worked!

I am so freakin' happy! I am 52 years old and I can now prove, "Old dogs can learn new tricks!"
Now I can enjoy this hobby like everyone else in all the YouTube videos across the vast creation called the "Internet" and it's all because of you and your hard work!

  24. I have a couple of friends who are looking forward to becoming pilots and this article is the best for them and, therefore, I will be recommending it to them. I hope they will find the school to be offering the aviation studies they wanted to learn. Thanks so much for sharing this information with us.
