Quadcopter Drone Flying Tutorial 1: Initialization, binding, and trimming your quadcopter (and why)

When attempting to fly, if your quadcopter drone immediately takes off at weird angles, flips, or is uncontrollable, please read on.  You possibly don't understand the importance of initializing your gyros.  Before you take to the air, you must first initialize the gyros on your quadcopter so that it understands level flight.  You must also link (bind) your transmitter with your quadcopter so that it follows the commands from your transmitter.  Finally, once in the air, you may do some additional tweaking (trimming) so that the copter can achieve a steady hover.  The following process is common for most of the low-cost starter quadcopters. Hobby grade models may utilize a different process.

Initialization Steps (Extremely Important Steps Before Every Flight)

1. Insert the battery into your quadcopter, but do not connect it just yet.

2. Place the quadcopter on a flat level surface.  It is very important that the surface be level, as a tilted surface will create errors to the initialization of the gyros.

3. Connect the battery with the quadcopter flat on the level surface.  Another option is to connect the battery while the quadcopter is being held in your hands, but IMMEDIATELY place the quadcopter on a flat surface after connecting.  Most quadcopters provide a few seconds after connection before the gyros start to synchronize.  Remove your hand and let the quadcopter remain motionless for about ten seconds.  This gives the gyro stabilizers time to initialize and set themselves to the level surface.

Binding the transmitter to the quadcopter's receiver

After the gyros have initialized, you will now link your transmitter controller with your quadcopter.  This process varies between models and manufacturers.  But again, for the cheaper models it may be as follows.

3-axis quadcopter binding
Simply turn the transmitter on, and wait about 7 seconds.  It may beep repeatedly, and then end with long beep.  This signals that the transmitter has binded with the quadcopter.

6-axis quadcopter binding
Turn on the transmitter.  Then increase throttle from 0 to full throttle, then back to 0 throttle.  You should hear a beep signifying that the transmitter has binded with the quadcopter.

Trimming

Bring the helicopter to hover a few feet above the ground.  With your hand off the cyclic controls, observe for any drifting right or left forward or back.  Ignore any drifting that you feel may be caused by the wind.

If the quadcopter drifts backwards, repeatedly press the pitch trim button forward until the drifting stops.  Repeatedly press the pitch trim backward if the quadcopter drifts forward until the drifting stops.

The same process goes for roll control.  Repeatedly press the roll trim right if the quadcopter drifts left, and the opposite if it drifts right until satisfied with the hover.

Yaw trim can also be applied, but usually the yaw gyro is pretty accurate as it is less dependent on the level surface and more on keeping the quadcopter steady during initialization.

    1. Randy, your gyros may be out of calibration. This can happen after a hard crash. But it's very simple to recalibrate them. Insert the battery, and place the quad on a flat and level surface. Wait a few seconds, then turn on your transmitter and bind it to the quadcopter. Set the transmitter rate to either 80 or 100%. Simultaneously, move both control sticks to their lower-left corners, and hold them there for 10 seconds. Release the sticks, wait a few seconds, and try to fly your quad. Hopefully the gyros should now be calibrated. Also in future flights remember to place your quad on a flat surface, and let it sit still for a few seconds to let the gyros initialize before binding the transmitter. Hope this helps.

I will give that a try tomorrow and let you know. Thanks for your help.

    3. The reason IMU inertial measurement units needs to be level is the kalman filters initialize and assume near zero readings. If it's slanted it's the same as non zeroed weigh scale. There would be a offset error forever in estimates.

  3. Tried it. Still will not hover.
Let me make sure I am doing it correctly. I placed the battery in the quad. I placed the quad on a flat surface, turned the transmitter on then plugged in the battery on the quad. I did not do the normal sync where you push the throttle stick up, hold for 3 seconds and then push the stick down, at which time the transmitter beeps and two of the quad lights stop flashing. Instead, I set the quad to 80 or 100% and pushed both sticks to the lower left corner. Held them for 10 seconds, released, then synced the quad pushing the left stick up, holding for 3 seconds and then pushed the stick down. Is that correct?

    1. 1. Plug the battery in on the quad.
      2. Immediately place on flat, level surface
      3. Wait about 10 seconds for gyros to initialize.
      4. Turn on transmitter, move left stick up and down until you hear a beep.
      5. Set transmitter to 80 or 100%
      6. Move both sticks to lower-left corner, and hold their for 10 seconds
      7. Release sticks, wait three seconds and try flying.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 for all future flights.

    2. Also note that there is one other problem that may cause this, particularll for the V262. The V262 uses brushed motors. They can go bad. Try slowly lifting your quad off the ground. If it repeatedly slides toward one of the motors, that motor has gone bad. If this is a new quad, contact the vendor that you purchased from (if Banggood, cservice@Banggood.com). Replacement motors are cheap (under $4), and are relatively easy to replace. Here's how to change a V262 motor.

    4. the two buttons on the right side of your controller, the inside button, hit it once 2 beeps, thats 80% hit again 3 beeps that 100%, hit a third time its back to 40%, 40% is usually the default speed.

  5. Just discovered this blog. Got a question. Does this method apply to all quad copters? I have been trying to get my Syma X5c to hover but to no avail. It drifts too much for my liking. It's new, so I expected it do hover straight out of the box.

    1. Charles, the gyros on the X5C can be jostled out of alignment during shipment. But it's very easy to recalibrate them. 1) Turn on and place your quad on a flat/level surface. 2) Bind your quad to the transmitter. 3) Simultaneously place and hold both control sticks to the lower-right corner until the LEDS start to blink rapidly. 4) Let go of the sticks and try flying.

Also, the X5C flies MUCH better without carrying the extra weight of its camera and landing skid. These can be easily removed by first unplugging the camera, then removing the door by opening and angling its clips out of the slide holder. But recommend keeping its propeller shields on until you feel comfortable flying your X5C.

      Delete
    2. Great tip.. pulled the camera and the skids off and it's flying better. Camera's not great anyway. Still getting the hang of the trims for hover though.

  6. Excellent post! Thank you!

I had been failing to BIND the Cyclone V262 until I read the importance of allowing the gyroscopes to calibrate on a FLAT surface before attempting to bind.

I read many on-line posts which were hardly as detailed and correct as yours.

You have helped me out of my mistakes and of thinking I had to return the copter for replacement.

One could only wish the instructions that come with this product were as good as yours! (they are certainly NOT)

    Thanks again!

  8. any other ideas on what i might try to get a syma x5c straightened out? It worked fine out of the box...perfect hover. Now it pulls to the right drastically. It is just short of flipping if I go full throttle with it and doesn't seem to even really want to leave the ground but rather just skid rapidly away from me to the right. I have tried everything above but am a little unsure about TRIMMING. I acn't even get it in the air to make adjustments it seems

    1. Mike, it sounds like your gyros might need recalibration. This can happen after a hard "landing" :) It's very simple to do. First insert your quad's battery and place the quad on a flat & level surface. Wait ten seconds then bind the transmitter to the quad. Next move both control sticks to their lower-right corner and hold them there for ten seconds. Let go of the sticks and try flying.

If this works, it's unlikely you'll need to do this again except if you experience another hard landing. But it's always good before flying to insert the battery and immediately place the quad on a level surface, waiting for ten seconds before binding the transmitter to the quad. This allows the gyros to initialize without being jostled.

    2. MikeElmore, it could be a motor going out. If you turn the blades with your fingers and it feels hard to turn and you can feel every time it hits a magnet then its definitely a bad motor. They should spin freely. So freely you can just blow on them to test. This is a very common problems with the symas and the striker from Worldtech. Ive got one burned myself and another that spins most if the time. I could hear the motor going out before it did.

  9. Hello, I just received my X5C-1 flyer via Singapore Post from Canton Province a day ago, and was basically "learning by crashing" until I stumbled up your site. Thanks.
Everything is now starting make sense except one thing: on my X5C-1 (-1 means updated version I think) the "throttle trim" seems to control only Camera OFF/ON. Is that right? Are there any other differences on trimming, because none of the trim controls seem to have any effect when I try to hover.
The rest of the controls seem to work OK (except Mode 1 and Mode 2 are switched so I'm selecting "Mode 1" in order to get the real "Mode 2"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous, please see my reply to Mike Elmore above. Try the recalibration first, then try trimming. As for differences, the main is that the X5C1 implements updated flight logic software to mitigate in-flight wobbling (particularly with wind) which is a big problem with the previous basic X5C.

    2. >Try the recalibration first, then try trimming

Ok, recalibration seemed to improve stability. So I can hover better now. (Or maybe I'm just getting better at flying this thing.)

But it doesn't hover perfectly, Drifting slightly to the right. Pushing the ROLL trim to the left doesn't have any effect on this drift, but does increase the number of dots displayed on the LCD. None of the trim channels seem to work. Except Throttle Trim, but it only turns the Camera ON and OFF.

I'm running X5C mode "1" (which is the standard Mode 2).

Also, if I pick up the plane and hold it with throttle about 50% I can't hear any change in engine pitch when I operate the Trim buttons. Also can't hear (or see) any change when I switch from High to Low speed (Upper Left button on console). But the display changes correctly when I press these buttons (i.e. trim dots, and 'H' and 'L' status etc).

But the main Throttle, Pitch, Roll and Yaw controls all seem to work normally and I can fly the copter OK, even with the slight drift in neutral position. Camera works great too.

I guess I should ask the vendor in China for help with this problem (NB Toys). They provided me great service in ordering and shipping through AliExpress). Maybe a loose wire on the control board?

In any case, I'm having great fun with this little copter now, thanks to your website, even without the trim.
      Thanks

    1. If the trim buttons aren't helping, then try the following:

      1. Plug the battery in on the quad.
      2. Immediately place it on a flat, level surface
      3. Wait about 10 seconds for gyros to initialize.
      4. Turn on transmitter, move left stick up and down until you hear a beep.
      5. Set transmitter to it's expert mode, or 80 or 100% turn rate.
      6. Move both sticks to lower-left corner, and hold their for 10 seconds until the quadcopter's lights flash. If nothing happens, then instead try holding both sticks to their lower-right corners.
      7. Release sticks, wait three seconds and try flying.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 for all future flights. And remember to trim the quadcopter using its trim buttons as described in the above article.

i cant make the drone lift off. it was working perfectly. i unmounted the propeller and the bumpers in order to put the drone in a bag to travel. since i mounted all back, when trying to lift, all motors run but the drone lift on to propeller side, the other two although they are running do not allow to lift off. I tried all the calibration advises (which by the led behaviour seems to work), but no better result. I wonder what it can be and if it could have been damaged during the flight travel.

    1. hi again. for the purpose of helping, the 4 propeller go per pair. When mounting them back, left side prop goes to the left back motor, the other left goes to the opposite motor. same for the right. if this can help, it fixed my issue.

    2. You have the props on wrong, check the drone picture
to see how the blades are positioned. Yo can also
figure the proper blade layout by spinning up the
motors with the blades on and touching each shaft
to see which way it's spinning. attach the blade so
that it pushes air downward. When this is right go
to the opposite side diagonally and put a identical
blade on that motor. The blades across from these
two motors spin the opposite direction.

  17. Hello... I have an X5C... and was wondering if you have some advice on the basics of controlling / flying your drone....Some along the lines of:

    1. Throttle control, lift drone approx 2ft above ground and land, repeat until you are comfortable with this task
    2. With green light facing you, fly drone forward and return to the same spot, repeat until you have full control
    3. With green light facing you, fly drone from left to right and then from right to left, returning to the same spot until you have full control
    4. Spin drone so red light is facing you in flight, then return to the same spot.

That sort of thing is what I had in mind, perhaps it's a bit prescriptive ?

    Any advice much appreciated.

The trim/calibration tips are really helpful and it makes an enormous difference to the stability.

    1. Gently turn the problem propeller by hand to see if you notice any binding spots in the gears. If so, there's likely a sand particle jammed between the teeth at the spot you feel the binding. It can easily be cleared with a toothpick.

I tried trimming and recalibration but failed...

these are symptoms of the copter.
    1. It maintains the altitude only at 13% of throttle level.
    2. Yaw control is almost impossible.

Also bending is proportional to amount of throttle I apply in one time. But once level it respond well to radio sticks (my ques: why it is taking time to level it and why quad bending with inc/dec throttle & how to correct)

Keep in mind that there are two clockwise and two counter clockwise propellers, and they alternate between shafts. Do a Google image search of your quadcopter. 40. Syma x5 instructions say, on item 4 of page 8, to pull both left and right levers to the lower "RIGHT." LEDs will blink fast for about three seconds, then return to normal. Their manual does not mention lower "LEFT."

Is it possible that the Syma calibrates by moving the levers to the lower right, instead of lower left? My X11's are flawless and hover with only occasional correction by lightly twitching the sticks using the lower right calibration process.

I'll try lower left tomorrow to see if that does anything.

can anybody please tell me how to calibrate my gyro's and just make my minivet more stable i am lost tried everything i know?.

  50. Hi...I have a serious problem..I have the Br6802 quadcopter..it used to fly high...but I've had it for about 2weeks now and when I try to fly it today..it just wouldn't rise say above 1 foot.. Kinda like it's in practice mode or something... I do I correct this. The blades and trimming is ok. Could it be the mode? Or the battery? Even at 60-100% speed it just hovers slightly about the ground..a couple inches that is.. It's really frustrating

  55. I've just purchased an x5c1 and watched several videos on extending range by lengthening the antenna in the radio and quad. So I tried it and cut 2 pieces of core from some rg36 coax to 6.3ish cm. After soldering the radio antenna, before checking clearance, I noticed the board did not line up with the faux plastic hollow antenna. So I bent it in two 90° angles to set inside it. I tried it and it does work but should the bend cut down on my distance? I haven't tried a range test due to my surroundings at my house (the only way is up). Any one else had to bend the copper? Did you get more range? What is best way to test range?

    1. Did you install any propellers. There are two clockwise, and two counterclockwise propellers. If installed incorrectly, the quadcopter will flip. Closely look at the following picture link, and make sure that the shape of your propellers match exactly as shown on each quadcopter arm. If not, reinstall to match the picture https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZmJXY7oNOqg/hqdefault.jpg

  61. High and Low do not mean what would logically make sense. On this quadcopter H or "high" is actually close to expert or race mode. It allows much more aggressive movements in pitch and roll. Low, makes it so you cant extremely over compensate and get into trouble but it will also mean you cant fight the wind if theres any at all.

Try it, lift off and fly in L then switch to H, much more aggressive.

I went through the instructions exactly turning the throttle to 0, then 100% for 3 secs, then back to 0. It beeps but the blades do not respond. Two white lights flash on ome side and the blue/red flash on /off the other side. Don't know what it means. Any clues? I'm about to return it. Also the instruction are HORRIBLE....broken English, bad grammar.

batteries were also replaced to fully charged ones but to no avail.
could it be the APM problem? if so, do i have to replace the APM or can it be fixed with mission planner?

    1. Did you change any propellers? You may have installed a wrong turning propeller on a wrong motor. There are two clockwise and two counterclockwise propellers and motors. All should be blowing air downward. If any are blowing air upward, then that one should be replaced with a propeller of different shape.

I even changed one of the motors and later even put a new receiver board and connected it to a new battery. Earlier when the problem started-even though it binded with the remote and lights were ok,it didn't respond with the motors a t all. Now it's ok and all motors work. But now lift absolutely. Could someone who knows this problem well respond as to what might be the issue of it not taking off even when motors are at full throttle? Thank you.

My brother was the last one who used it and said that he just charged the batteries and once he tried flying it this happened. I need help please! The drone isn't even a week old!

    1. This is most likely a motor going bad. Google your 'copter'a brand name and moodel, then see if you can purchase a replacement motor for it. Be sure to specify which direction your old motor turned when it worked (clockwise or counter-clockwise) when you place your order.

  88. Yeah, it's strange that a 69-yr-old woman is here but...I am! I've had the X11 for 3-4 days and, because of the Houston-area heat, I'm learning inside! The away and back exercise is getting easier for me but I'm finding that the remote is ultra-sensitive? Maintaining a constant altitude is the pits! Is there any action I can take to help with that? (Being indoors is very restrictive so getting outdoors with the quad will at least help.)

Can you suggest what may be wrong and how I may fix this?

  93. Hi guys,

Just received a JJRC H25G from GearBest. It's my first drone so everything is new to me. I've been reading this posts and I would like your help on the following issues:

    1) Since day 1 I am not able to have a simple hover behavior as the the drone was always pushing front. I've just used it for three cycles and in this last one two of the propellers (left right and back left) randomly stop to work when I'm powering it up. They eventually turn back on again, but are causing a very awkward and hard to control flight. Is there any tweaking that I might have missed or is this just a case to RMA?

    2) Next issue is related with transmitter's battery. For any reason it only charges up to half capacity. I've tried different USB chargers but the result is always the same. When i turn it on it shows full capacity but 1 second afterwards battery is half capacity. Any suggestions on this one?

    Thanks in advance
